OUR LEGACY - Annexation
With the 1840's came many changes in Texas generally and in Houston particularly. Sam Houston's second term as president of Texas ended in 1844 when the United States of America finally offered Statehood to the republic. Although Texans had sought annexation since 1836, believing the future development of their country would be enhanced under United State's sovereignty, there were many in the United States Congress who opposed the annexation of a slave state.
